Award Requirements

Purpose

Generate new knowledge through the process of working with a community partner to design and build a solution to a community-defined problem in the area of health or the upstream determinants of health.

“Design and Build” can refer to a physical or technological product, or the novel application of existing data, information or resources.

Eligibility

PIs must be faculty who would be eligible for federal funding
Academic and community partner
Clear community- defined problem

Award Information

$165,000 – $170,000 Total Awards to be given
7-12 projects
Funded between $10,000 – $25,000

Clarity and relevance of budget to project goals and outcomes
Feasibility of work plan
Fits Motivation, Focus, and Overall Approach of CDHW-IRG
Multidisciplinary research group
Evidence that an effective team can be put together
Relevance to an external funding source

Prioritization

Since an important goal of the CDHW is to build sustainable research and community partnerships across the state, priority will be given to proposals with a wide range of relevant partners. Examples include:

  • Researchers from across Rutgers, including RU-NB, RBHS, and RU-Camden
  • Community partners from distinct community areas (content or geography)

Conditions

After March 2019 funding announcements, the following conditions apply to funding recipients:

  • Participate in CDHW meetings (March 2019 Kickoff Meeting, Fall 2020 and Spring 2020 Checkpoint Meetings, and Spring 2021 Transition Meeting)
  • May 2019: Subsequent to Kickoff Meeting, turn in updated project plan (revision of application).
  • Spring 2020: Prior to Checkpoint Meeting, turn in report of preliminary results.  (See Project Expectations for different ways to satisfy this requirement).
  • Spring 2021: Prior to Transition Meeting, turn in plans for future funding. (See Project Expectations for different ways to satisfy this requirement).

Letter of Intent for Collaborative Projects

The LOI should formulate a concept as completely as possible; however, the executive committee knows that partner gaps may exist and will work with PIs to find partners with needed skills or expertise.

  • Identify problem/puzzle/opportunity to be addressed (200 words)
  • Identify community partner(s).
  • At a broad level, summarize approach/strategy, indicating how it addresses problem/puzzle/opportunity with development of practical solution while contributing to generalizable knowledge or gap (300 words)
  • Identify ultimate external funding source(s).
  • Indicate willingness to have name listed on CDHW-IRG website for outreach by other applicants.
  • Indicate if executive committee help is needed to find additional partners, skills, or datasets.

Executive Committee Review

  • Solicits invited comments from relevant experts
  • Invites comments from CDHW members
  • Discover potential relevance among projects.
  • Consider innovation, applicability, possibilities for future funding

Executive Committee Recommendation

  • Either advance to next round of review or rejection.  If advance:
  • Recommendations to improve alignment with CDHW goals
  • Suggests potential mentors
  • 11/15/2018

  • Specifies the approach / strategy
  • Outlines the research process, with particular attention to how the process is iterative and collaborative
  • Specifies plan for dissemination of results in both academic and community settings

  • Provide agreement by all parties to have CVs/websites  linked to on CDHW website
